How did we come to these decisions?

For the best photo of a particular event (like those from our Manly and Featherdale trips) the submitted photos are hung in the photo gallery at the next pizza night and all attending executive members cast 1 vote each on their favourite photo, the one with the most votes that night wins!

For monthly competitions, things are a little more complex. For each competition we have a criteria set, for the “Black and White” competition the criteria where;

• Quality and Sharpness: the overall quality of the image and how sharp the focus was.
• Originality: Judged against how normal or common an image, or type of image the submission was.
• Contrast: How good the tonal range of the blacks, whites, and greys are in the image.
• Use of Black and White: Judging if the use of black and white was good or bad.
• Impact: The strength and presence of the image.

Each executive member then gave a mark from 1-5 for each criteria against each submitted image. The scores for each criteria are then averaged. The averaged scores are then added together to get the final score. The images then get a rank based on their score, obviously the highest scoring image is first. With 5 criteria the final score is out of 25 in total.

Obviously there is some subjective outlook when the marks are given. Photography is an art form, and thus there is rarely a case where subjectivity isn’t involved. This method is aimed at making that subjectivity as fair for everyone as possible. And the final result’s show that. It can be revealed that the top 5 positions are all within a single full mark of each other. The final rankings where very very close, and Anna scored highest, making her the winner!

2. 21.4 – Pras
3. 21.1 – Nicholas
4. 21 – Matthew
5. 20.8 – Cassie

Other rankings won’t be released, these are being shown to show how close the top 5 are, and the next few positions are only 2-3 points below first place. In all, 9 different executives cast their vote for all photos and it was a really close competition!

Thank you to everyone who submitted their photos into the competitions, we all hope to see further submissions from more members in the future!
